**Happy New Year!**

We are beginning the year with a study of measurement of time. We will be looking at solving problems based on elapsed time using years, days, hours, minutes and seconds. The students will also be using a 24 hour clock.

Week of November 25th

This week we began our final project in data management. The students will be working in groups to collect and present data to address a "real life" issue at our school.

Student have also enjoyed sharing strategies to improve their math skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Students are learning the importance of regular practice of their math skills to improve their speed and accuracy. Below you will find a link to the XtraMath website. This site is an excellent resource for at home practice. A note with each student's access code with be sent home in each child's agenda.

**Week of October 28th**

Our unit on Patterning has been completed. Along with identifying patterns, students began to learn how to better communicate their math thinking in writing.

A real need for students to work on their math facts i.e. number sense, addition, subtraction and multiplication was identified during this unit. Try practice flashcards with your child to get those math facts down pat!

This week we will begin Data Management.

**Week of September 30th**

Assessment of our place value and decimals unit is complete. Student goals for Math have been discussed.

**This week students will be representing tenths and hundredths using decimals.**

Numeration (Place Value): Students will work to represent and compare whole number to 100 000 in a variety of way (base ten blocks, place value charts, words, standard and expanded form, number lines etc...).

Students will begin working with partners this week to solve math problems. In the problem below students were asked to represent the price of a Subaru Impreza ($21,923) in as many ways as they could.
